Brushing and flossing are excellent ways to keep your teeth clean and healthy, but they aren’t enough to remove tartar from your teeth. Tartar, which is harder than bone and can’t be removed by brushing, holds bacteria that can irritate and damage your gums, leading to decay and gum disease. It can only be removed by a dental hygienist using special tools.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that you get your teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year to maintain good dental health and prevent gum disease. Regular exams also ensure that signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer are detected early so they can be treated before they evolve into serious health issues.
When you come in to Gage Park Dental for a cleaning appointment, we’ll begin by checking your teeth and gums for obvious signs of damage and decay. Then our hygienist will clean the tartar from your teeth with special tools. Once the tartar is removed, the hygienist will polish your teeth with a special rotary toothbrush to improve their appearance and remove any stains.
The hygienist can also help you by teaching you proper brushing and flossing techniques and how to care for crowns, dentures, or other restorations or appliances.
After your cleaning, our dentist will examine your mouth and teeth to check for decay, and also to screen for early signs of oral cancer.
